Whether you have the Dyson Purifier Big & Quiet or the Dyson Cool tower fan, here’s how to get the most out of them
Dyson has a lot of fans in its portfolio – so many in fact that it’s actually pretty hard to decide which one is right for you. All of the fans have a number of similar features in common however, certainly when it comes to the MyDyson app anyway.
While some have humidifying features, some are hot and cool fans and some are cooling only, there are a number of tips and tricks that apply across all models. These are our top tricks for Dyson fans when using the MyDyson app, whether you have the Dyson Purifier Big+Quiet Formaldehyde or the Dyson Cool tower fan.
Find out the air quality of your room
Is the room you have your Dyson fan in offering you decent air quality? The app will tell you. Open the MyDyson app and tap on the three lines in the top left to select your Dyson fan from the menu.
The first screen that appears once you click on your Dyson fan will be colour-coded to show you what the air quality is like in the room your Dyson fan is in, as well as offer the temperature, humidity and VOC scale your room is at.
Swipe up for all the details
There’s a lot more than meets the eye with the MyDyson app when it comes to the data. When you open your fan in the MyDyson app, you’ll get the house screen we mentioned above, but swipe up from that screen and you’ll get a lot more information.
You can swipe through a range of graphs that move from Air Quality through to PM2.5, PM10, HCHO, VOC, NO2, Temperature and Humidity. The data will go back a week so you can see how the air quality and various factors that contribute to that quality have changed over the course of the previous 7 days.
Find out what it all means
Data is great but unless you’re a scientist, some of the data you will find about the air quality in your room collected by your Dyson fan might be a little complicated. Do you know what PM10 is because we certainly don’t without a bit of Googling.
The MyDyson app does break it down quite a lot though – you just have to know where to find it. Open the MyDyson app and load up your fan by tapping on the three lines in the top left corner. You will see all the information we mentioned above, such as whether the air quality is good. Tap on any of the data points – VOC, humidity, temperature – and you will be taken to another screen that explains the data so you can see what you’re dealing with.
PM in PM10 stands for particulate matter and PM10 refers to microscopic particles smaller than 10 microns, which are things like pollen and other allergens, just in case you wanted to know.
Create a schedule
You can schedule your Dyson fan, which is great for keeping the air quality in a room good without having to remember to turn your fan on every day. Getting to the scheduling is a little more tricky though.
Open the MyDyson app and head to your fan by tapping on the three lines in the top left corner. You’ll then need to open up settings, which you get to by tapping on the settings cog in the top right corner of the fan screen. Tap on ‘Scheduling your Machine’ and then ‘Continue’. You can then select your days, start time and settings and finish with ‘Add Event’.
Set up voice control
Dyson fans can be controlled through Siri, Alexa or Google Assistant so you can simply ask any of those smart assistants to turn your fan on, or off once you have set them up. Open the MyDyson app and tap on the three dots in the left top corner to open up your fan’s main screen.
You’ll then want to tap on the settings icon in the top right and tap on Voice Control. From here, select the voice assistant you want to use and follow the on-screen instructions to link your accounts together.
Use your phone as the remote
Dyson fans come with a small remote but let’s be honest, things like that are very easy to misplace and you know they will go for a wonder exactly when you need them. You can use your phone as the remote though. Just open the MyDyson app, head to your fan and tap on the remote icon in the bottom right corner. From here, you can also set a timer and turn on night mode so you get an extra couple of tips here.
Adjust the tilt of your fan
One of the best things about Dyson fans is that you can adjust the angle of them and you can do this without having to move. at least not much anyway. It means if you’re lying in bed and the air isn’t exactly where you want it, get your phone out, open the MyDyson app and adjust it. The tilt icon is the one in between the fan speed and the remote icon.
Find out how long your filter has left
Your Dyson fan – whatever one you have – will need its filters changing at some point. We have seen a filter that was replaced and it is not a pretty sight. Keeping on top of the filter replacements will make sure your fan does everything it is supposed to be doing.
Open the MyDyson app and open up your fan’s page. You’ll then want to tap on the settings cog in the top right, before hitting ‘Your Machine’s Settings’. From here, scroll down until you see the ‘Air’ section. It will detail your remaining filter life – or filters – depending on your fan model.
