Sonos Voice Control (finally) adds Spotify to the mix

Sonos Voice Control went live in the US back in June 2022 and now, just under 2 years later, Spotify has finally joined the party.

When the multi-room audio specialist’s answer to Alexa first arrived on the likes of the Sonos One and the Sonos Beam back in 2022 it supported music controls from the likes of Amazon Music, Apple Music, Pandora, Deezer, and Sonos Radio.

You could still play, pause, change volume and skip tracks if you already had Spotify songs playing on your Sonos speakers, but there was no access to extra goodies like selecting artists, songs and albums.

That’s all changed now though, with Spotify Free and Premium subscribers now able to play their Spotify favorites on their compatible Sonos Voice speakers, including personal or curated playlists, podcasts, audiobooks and more, just by using voice commands.

If you say things like “Hey Sonos, I like this track” during playback then Sonos Voice Control can even add the song to a Spotify ‘liked songs’ playlist.

The good news is that, if you only (or mostly) use Spotify then Sonos Voice Control will automatically play from Spotify if it is the most used music service on your Sonos system, with no need to go through the settings menu in the Sonos S2 app.

You can also choose to have Spotify as your default audio service (likewise Apple Music, Amazon Music etc.)

The good news for the security conscious is that all Sonos Voice requests are processed locally rather than in in the cloud to provide complete privacy.

Spotify via Sonos Voice Control is available to Spotify Premium subscribers and Spotify free right now. Check out our guide to using Sonos Voice Control to find out how to get started.
