Footage from smart security cameras like the Nest Cam can be helpful in the case of an incident like (God forbid) a burglary, but you need to know how to get hold of that footage, otherwise it’s ultimately completely redundant.
Nest has a fairly robust set of options for creating and sharing video clips of footage from your home security camera. There are times you might not want to create or share a clip however, and instead you might want to just save them for your own records.
You never know when the cloud could evaporate and lose all your footage after all, and it’s always safe to have a physical backup. How, exactly, can you do that though? Well, there are a couple of ways. We’ll walk you through them.
How to save video from your Nest Cam
The first thing you need to know is that you’re probably going to need a Nest Aware subscription. The good news there is that Nest Aware has been simplified since it first launched and the plans are cheaper and more cost effective than they ever were initially.
Nest Aware not only gets you video history, but it gives you continuous video recording, activity zones, intelligent alerts and the ability to create clips, which is important.
Now, to actually save some footage you’re going to have to make some clips. Nest automatically saves all your footage up in the cloud, but you can’t take any of it unless you create a clip.
There are two ways to create a clip: on your phone or on your computer. We will guide you through both.
How to save a Nest Cam video clip on your phone
To save a Nest Cam video clip on your phone, follow the simple steps below. You’ll be able to save the clip to your camera roll or share it once you’ve created it.
- Open the Nest app.
- Choose the camera with the footage you want to save on it.
- Scroll through your camera’s history until you find the clip.
- Tap on the clip when you find what you are looking for.
- Press New Clip in the bottom right corner to save the clip.
- Choose Save to camera roll to download the footage to your phone.
How to save a Nest Cam video clip on your computer
- Go to home.nest.com.
- Select your camera with the footage you want to download.
- Click on Clips in the lower right corner of your desktop.
- Tap Create Clip.
- Drag the sliders to choose your clip length.
- Add a name for your clip.
- Tap Save.
Now, it’s important to note that your phone can only download clips made in the Nest app. Your computer can download all clips and time lapses, no matter where they were made. After you’ve done all that though you’re good.
Congratulations, you’ve saved your Nest Cam clips.
