Outdoor smart security cameras are great but, let’s face it, even with a decent Wi-Fi mesh system in place, there are always going to be times when the signal drops off and your coverage is interrupted.
That shouldn’t be the case with the new Abode Edge Camera, which has just been unveiled over in Las Vegas at CES, as it promises a transmission range of over 1.5 miles.
That’s thanks to the Wi-Fi HaLow tech on board, which Abode teamed up with Morse Micro to develop.
Wi-Fi HaLow, or IEEE 802.11ah as it is otherwise known, is a wireless networking protocol that operates on 900 MHz license-exempt bands to provide a much more vastly extended Wi-Fi range than the traditional 2.4 and 5GHz bands.
Obviously, that 1.5 mile figure is theoretical but with an uninterrupted line of sight that’s what it can achieve. Pretty sure you’d need this big antennas screwed in though to get near those levels…
Either way, it should easily be able to reach down to the end your garden or driveway, even with walls, trees, windows and whatever else is blocking its path causing too many issues.
Abode tells us that Morse Microâs HaLow system-on-chip (SoC) solution can penetrate transmission obstacles and provide unmatched performance, even in noisy environments crowded by multiple devices and cameras.
The smart home security system specialist states that it boasts 10 times the range, 100 times the coverage area and 1,000 times the volume of traditional Wi-Fi technologies.
And if that’s not enough, it also boasts an impressive 1-year battery life from the 6,000mAh power pack on board.
That’s because it uses AI smarts, powered by Xailient, combined with a PIR sensor to effectively shut down when it doesn’t detect anything of note.
It can, we’re assured, thanks to real-time data processing during these periods of shutdown, provide instantaneous responses.
In terms of the usual security camera specs, which take a bit of a back seat here because of the obvious USPs, you’re looking at a Full HD 1080p camera, which can work independently as a standalone device or be incorporated into a Abode security system setup.
To compliment the new Edge Camera, Abode is also launching a new single-camera Video Plan that incorporates AI-enabled Smart Detect, live view, and a 10-day timeline for reviewing and downloading captured video clips for $3.99 per month
For users looking to use more than one camera, the Abode Standard Plan is $6.99 per month, this plan extends to an unlimited number of cameras.
We’re expecting the Abode Edge Camera to launch later in Q1 2024, it will cost $199.99.
