Larian Studios came off of a strong year thanks to the release of Baldur’s Gate 3, with the Xbox Series X/S version launching during The Game Awards. Unfortunately, a severe bug has been doing the rounds on Xbox, leading to a loss of progress.
The developer said it was aware of the issue on Twitter and confirmed that it occurs when saving and exiting the game. It revealed due to a firmware issue, “the save file is not fully committed to disk yet.” Though Microsoft is aware of and working on a fix, operating at a lower capacity due to the holidays means it “may take a while before a proper fix becomes available.”
The developer advises players for the time being to activate cross-saves and link their Xbox and Larian accounts to automatically upload the last five saves to the developer’s servers. You can then reactivate cross-saves and access the files if the bug occurs. Larian is working on extending the amount of uploaded save files in “the coming days.”
“We completely understand that losing progress is frustrating and unacceptable. We’re doing everything we can to ensure this problem – which we understand is unique – is resolved as quickly as possible, and we’ll keep you up to date with progress.”
Baldur’s Gate 3 is also available for PC and PS5. Check out our reviews for the former and the latter.
We’re aware that there is a save issue on Xbox that continues to linger throughout the holidays. It occurs when exiting the game after saving. The game thinks the save was successful but due to a firmware issue, the save file is not fully committed to disk yet.
